A Rare Beauty: the Blood Moon! 🌙🔴

A journey of 250 miles to get this rare capture

The final image of the Blood Moon in totality last night, captured from an observatory grade telescope and a high end mirrorless camera

Last night, the cosmos put on a show—a fleeting, yet unforgettable, display of celestial beauty. As the Moon slipped into Earth’s shadow, it was bathed in deep crimson hues, a result of sunlight filtering through our planet’s atmosphere—essentially, every sunset and sunrise on Earth projected onto the lunar surface. Visible across most of the western hemisphere, it was a rare spectacle, one that I hope inspired countless people—including you—to pause, look up, and marvel at the universe.

For me, capturing this event was both a challenge and a privilege. I drove 235 miles from Brentwood, TN, to the Veterans Overlook at Clinch Mountain in East Tennessee. The view was stunning. I spent the whole night outside with two of my photographer buddies photographing the eclipse from start to finish. The partial eclipse started around 12:15 am EST. Totality hit around 3:00 am EST, and the eclipse ended around 5:20 am EST.

For this image, I used a high-end, observatory-grade telescope to capture a single long exposure at totality. Unlike my usual approach of stacking thousands of frames, this method preserved the eclipse’s natural depth and tonal richness in a single shot. The result? A stunning 45-megapixel print showcasing an incredible level of detail and colors far beyond what the human eye can perceive. Interestingly, this particular eclipse revealed more blues and purples than any I’ve captured before—a result of that night’s unique atmospheric conditions. Every lunar eclipse paints its own story in color.

This Blood Moon image is one of my most detailed lunar eclipse captures, showcasing the Moon in its deep red hue with an incredible level of authenticity. Unlike many processed eclipse images that often lose natural details, this one preserves the true colors and textures of the lunar surface. The high-end observatory-grade camera I used allowed me to capture not just the Moon, but also the surrounding stars—something rarely seen in eclipse photos due to the Moon’s brightness. The intricate surface details remain visible even in the Moon’s shadowed regions, highlighting the delicate balance between light and darkness during totality. This image is a true testament to the beauty and precision that astrophotography can reveal.

The prints of this Blood Moon image are rare and limited, making them a truly special addition to any collection. With each print capturing the unparalleled level of detail and authenticity that I strive for in every shot, these pieces offer a glimpse into a moment that can never be exactly recreated. Due to the unique nature of this image and the careful process involved in its creation, only a select number of prints will be made available. Each one is a limited edition, signed and numbered, ensuring its rarity and timeless value. This is not just a photograph; it’s a piece of the universe, captured in its most captivating form.

Events like these are the pinnacle of astrophotography, pushing every skill I’ve developed over the years to the limit. If you’re just starting your journey into astrophotography, know that every expert was once a beginner. I hope this image, and the story behind it, inspires you to chase your own moments of cosmic wonder.

Clear Skies,

Rami
